Alfalfa is a staple of so many farms in the upper Midwest. But with the multiple demands of running a farm, from growing multiple crops and managing livestock to bringing it all to market, it’s difficult to take care of all the details of productive, highly nutritious forage.
And since fields differ in their fertilizer needs, soil testing is recommended to establish baselines and accurately assess nutrient needs. The key nutrients needed (and that alfalfa takes out of your soil) are phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, boron and several secondary nutrients.
You can tell if you’re deficient in most of these by the color, size and vigor of your plants, but by the time you see it, it’s too late and your crop is suffering.
And alfalfa is pretty particular. For instance, boron is far down on the list of necessary nutrients, and a ton of alfalfa takes only 0.08 lbs. of boron out of the soil. (For comparison, the next most crucial nutrient above boron is sulfur, and a ton of alfalfa takes 75 times more sulfur than boron.) But if your soil is boron deficient, you can expect plants about 1/3 the size of normal and with a very yellow leaf.
And remember, being organic changes everything. That’s why you need the Purple Cow crop-specific program.
Purple Cow products help in the all-important seed-bed preparation, as well as ongoing maintenance of alfalfa stands by organically providing balanced fertility, beneficial biology and carbon. We can also add in minerals to correct deficiencies, increase our products’ effectiveness and reduce trips over the field. The results will be improved stand establishment, increased sugar content, reduced stand loss and more.
Including Purple Cows products in your forage program will increase yields and quality. Real-farm trials showed an increased availability of essential nutrients liberated from soils far beyond the amounts applied. This means you get more effective nutrient utilization, reducing input costs while improving yield and quality.
Purple Cow has spent years developing our own unique, organic solutions for crop-specific applications. Contact us and we’ll be glad to share more details about how our products can be the solutions you need for your soil, your crop and your farm.
